Court

Caitlin Kontaridis

In Court

That girl was out on stand, a kettle rushing with steam rose under her cheeks.

In one swoop they bound together with their angry voices to decide her failures

Like parliament,

Wigs and powdered makeup, whispers gossip and fumes the plea of guilty.

The arguments

ran from

ear to ear

in panic to find reason.

She dismissed the blame and left. The case

was never dismissed.

After Court

He is still

in her class

taking up all the air in the room.

He is smiling!

Mocking her, his broken leg, and dead father.

Speaking was the same as silence

If she was quiet - if she told you

No difference

He is still

Sitting next to her

every day

For three

more

years.
